“Do you remember me?” As I looked at her sweet face standing in my office, I responded, “Of course I remember you!” Standing before me was a beautiful girl who had been a SOLVE resident
six years ago. She participated in faith formation and accomplished many things while living here, but she had struggled with letting go of the unhealthy relationship with her child’s father. Deep down she knew it was not good…but something inside her kept clinging to the hope that a magical transformation would take place in him, so they could be a happy family.
She left just before her son was born to give the relationship a chance, and we did not have any more contact until today. She stated that deep down inside she knew she should stay at SOLVE, but her heart was confused and she really hoped that the father of her child would come around. After all…he promised. But it was a promise he couldn’t keep.
Things went from bad to worse after the baby was born, and the final straw for her came when the
baby’s dad attempted to strangle her while she held her infant son in her arms. She left that night and
never turned back. Drawing on many of the things she learned at SOLVE, she stepped forward towards
creating a solid life for her and her son. It started with getting out her “goals and objectives” sheet she
had worked on in Case Management at SOLVE, and she began to apply the things she had learned herself.
It wasn’t easy…but step by step, motivated by the love for her child…she pushed forward.
Remembering how supported she felt at SOLVE through the love of God, she went back to church. She
continued on with her education, and she focused her attention on caring for her son. Repeating to
herself over and over again what she would hear her House Manager say to all the women at SOLVE on a regular basis…”Don’t ever settle! Grow yourself and wait for the man that God will send to you one day, to be a husband to you and a father to your child.”
And she did! Today she was in the neighborhood and had the nudge to stop by and say thank you to
SOLVE. To let us know that she made it and that she is so appreciative of everything she received while a resident at SOLVE. She gives all credit to God AND to those who support the ministry of SOLVE, so that she could be a part of this family in her time of need. Because of your graciousness…this beautiful mom is now married to a wonderful man, and they are proud parents of her six-year-old boy and their thirteen month old baby girl. She finished her education, and is gainfully employed helping to support their family.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.”
I am so very thankful for all of the individuals who lay up their treasures in heaven and have huge hearts
for the ministry of SOLVE Maternity Homes. Because of your compassion and care for the women and
babies SOLVE serves, we are celebrating 40 years of being “Inspired by Life”. While creating over 1,300
life stories like the one above, of women who have lived, learned, and been loved while living in a SOLVE home, WE COULDN'T HVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!
